How the job runs
Backyard excavation is mostly an access problem. This is how we work out whether the job fits through your side gate before anyone commits to anything.
- Haul spoil out with a tracked dumper so barrow-loads of trips down the side passage are not needed.
- Pick the machine that fits, usually a 1.7 tonne class digger that goes through a standard gate.
- Dig with the machine where it reaches, hand-finish the last half metre near walls and pipes.
- Measure the access path: gate width, overhead obstructions, turns and ground underfoot.
- Lay boards or plates where the ground is soft so lawns and paving stay intact.

Problems we plan around
Fences coming down "just because". Plenty of operators quote backyard jobs assuming panel removal. Ours fit through the gate, so your fence stays up unless there is a genuine reason otherwise.
Lawns chewed to mud. Track mats under the machine spread the weight. Your grass gets marked but recovers, instead of becoming a replanting project.
Pipes found the hard way. We ask about known services and dig carefully around them. Dial Before You Dig covers the street; private lines get located by eye and hand before the bucket bites.
Spoil dumped in the wrong spot. Diggers push spoil where convenient for them. We put it where the dumper can reach it, which keeps your yard workable during the job.
Common questions
How wide does my side gate need to be?
Our standard tight-access digger passes through 780mm. If yours is tighter, measure it and tell us; narrower machines exist and we would rather know upfront.
Will the digger crack my pool or damage pipes?
We locate services before digging and keep clear distances. Nothing is guaranteed on any demolition-adjacent work, but careful digging is the whole reason people hire a specialist instead of the cheapest machine.
Can you take the dirt away the same day?
Yes, the tracked dumper loads straight into a truck on the street. Backyards are usually cleaned up before we leave, same visit.
Do you quote before seeing the access?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. We look at the gate and yard first, then give you a written price. The look is free.
